With reference to your telegram No. 40 of the 14th April [1], I have the honour to transmit the accompanying copy of a note addressed by His Majesty’s Embassy at Berlin on behalf of His Majesty’s Government in the Commonwealth of Australia to the German Ministry for Foreign Affairs regarding the withdrawal of His Majesty’s Legation from Vienna and its replacement by a Consulate General.

Note (copy) BERLIN, 26 April 1938
His Majesty’s Embassy presents its compliments to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and, under instructions from His Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs [1] and at the instance of His Majesty’s Government in the Commonwealth of Australia, has the honour to inform them that the Commonwealth Government have given consideration to the terms of this Embassy’s Notes Nos. 129 and 130 of April 2nd [2] regarding the withdrawal of His Majesty’s Legation from Vienna and its replacement by a Consulate-General: and that, in taking note of the decision of His Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom in this matter, the Commonwealth Government desire to reserve their position in regard to treaties and other matters which will arise in consequence of the incorporation of Austria in the German Reich.
