Memorandum, Canberra, 21 March 1952

U.S. Embassy has forwarded to us today following message dated March 20th, 1952, from Mr. John Foster Dulles for the Prime Minister and the Minister for External Affairs.

‘It is a matter of great gratification that the U.S. Senate today by acclamation and without any recorded opposition approved the Tripartite Security Treaty.

I am confident that this marks a great step forward in the establishment of Peace, Security and Justice in the Pacific area.’ Suggest you forward the following reply to U.S. Embassy for transmission to Mr. Dulles.

‘I share your gratification at approval by Senate of the Tripartite Security Treaty, and I am sure that if Mr. Casey were in Australia, he would join me in this message of congratulation.’
