At the meeting at 1430 hours 21 December Huang simply accepted without further ado the text of the communique contained in my telegram 58712 subject to inclusion at the end of the first paragraph of the date ‘December 21, 1972’ . the end of the third para to read ‘before January 25, 1973’ and the deletion of the article ‘the’ before ‘performance’ in the last paragraph. I accepted these.

2. Huang then said that communique could be signed at 2100 hours 21 December as had been tentatively agreed. He also agreed to your suggestion for the release of the communique and the messages (para 4 of your 6224),3 stipulating only that the communique should precede the messages in the release.

3. The Chinese text is to be authenticated at a meeting in this Embassy at 1730 hours 21 December.

4. I gave Huang the letter about Francis James (para 5 of my telegram 5888).4 Renouf.

1 21 December. Renouf cabled: ‘Bad temper sometimes pays off! The P.R.C. Ambassador has asked for and I agreed to another meeting at 1430 hours 21 December. Huang also said that he wants the communique signed at 2100 hours 21 December as arranged and expects that this can be done’ .
