Commonwealth Government to Lord Caldecote, U.K. Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs

Cablegram 314 22 June 1940,

Your telegram Circular D. 266. [1] Italian Consuls.

Hs Majesty’s Government in the Commonwealth of Australia has decided to permit all Italian Consuls, Staffs and employees together with their families to leave Australia and that everything win be done to facilitate departure.

Government is conferring with Consul General [2] tomorrow regard to facilities required in connection with private moneys and personal property.

Glad if you would ensure Italian Government advised accordingly.

We have as yet no intimation as to what country will represent Italian interests in Australia. There is no carriere Consul for Brazil here and Consul General Italy has asked for instructions from his Government.
